Coached UTEP to their first and only national championship in 1966
Credited with changing college basketball forever by defeating Adolph Rupp's all-white Kentucky team while starting five black players in the NCAA national championship game in 1966
Ranks in the top 20 all-time for wins in Division I
Suffered just 5 losing seasons in 38 years at UTEP
Led UTEP to 17 20-plus win seasons, seven WAC championships, 4 WAC tournament titles and 21 postseason trips (14 NCAA, 7 NIT)
Led his team to the Sweet 16 after an upset of then number one, Kansas
Honored by UTEP by having the basketball arena named the Don Haskins Center
Member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame
Enshrined in the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997 |
